Simple Full Screen Background Image will allow you to easily upload and set a full screen image as the background of your WordPress website. Images will be automatically scaled with the browser, so regardless of the browser size, the image will always fill the screen, even as the browser is resized live.
Note:Β this plugin is now maintained by Scott DeLuzio.
The Greatly Enhanced Pro Version of this Plugin is Available
doesn’t work, it says it is damaged. I tried to uninstall it, but wouldn’t let me. How do I uninstall it? It doesn’t shows up in the plugin page, but in my ftp I have the plugin directory correctly placed. When I try to delete it, it says “filemng failed: rm: cannot remove `/var/www/vhosts/sara-fotografo.it/httpdocs/wordpress/wp-content/plugins/simple-full-screen-background-image/simple-full-screen-background/simple-full-screen-background.php’: Permission denied. thank you
@Sara – firstly, the problem with it being damaged is that you have an extra folder in the plugin folder. There should only be one “simple-full-screen-background-image” folder, and then the files inside of it. Did you install from the WP plugin repository or manaully via FTP?
In your FTP app, right click on the plugin folder and select permissions. Change to 755 or 777 then try deleting again.
thank you, I suspected that the double folder was a problem, I installed it from the WP plugin repository. I’m trying to change permission now, thank you very much π
It doesn’t let me set permission to 777, only 755, but it still doesn’t let me delete it
FTP Errore: Cannot delete simple-full-screen-background-image
550 /httpdocs/wordpress/wp-content/plugins/simple-full-screen-background-image: Directory not empty.
thank you π
@sara – that’s really strange that you can’t delete it. Maybe try contacting your hosting provider
Great plugin. Will share soon!
Pingback: Full Screen Image Background Wordpress Plugin - WPExplorer
This looks like a great plugin, but i ran into two problems.
1) when installing from the WordPress plugin directory, it does the double-folder thing. I can fix that manually and enable the plugin. But,
2) clicking on “Choose Image” in the admin screen yields a Javascript error.
`ReferenceError: Can’t find variable: tb_show`
I will see what I can do about the double folder bug. What version of WP are you using?
yeah, me too. “choose me” doesn’t do anything.
I have a background on one of my sites that is a little wonky. this would fix it…I will try it later…..or maybe redownload it later too….
seems like a good one…
@Jan – I will be updating it soon to solve these issues. In the mean time, upgrading to WpP 3.2.1 should fix the problem.
It doesn’t work like in your help video! When I get to ‘choose image’ nothing happens! In my media the image is there waiting, but I can’t get to choose it, or see it previewed or anything – I’m up-to-date with all versions of software.
Help!!
@Dan – if you are unable to click Insert into Post, you can also just copy and paste the URL, then click save changes
Cutting and pasting url works – thanks! But I never get any scaling options – I don’t see the whole image as it’s way too big… Nearly there! Any ideas?
Thanks
@David – The scaling options only work when using Insert Into Post. If you image is massive, you will want to shrink it down. 1280 px wide is probably about as wide as you want to go.
Great plug in! Is it possible to link the background image with a URL ?
this would be very helpfull.
@Dimitris – No by default, but you could easily mod it to allow that.
I had to contact my provider and they removed the directory for me. Thank you, i’ll try your plugin soon π
Is it possible to change the background based on what page you’re viewing?
@Lindsey – I’m working on a Pro version that will have that feature.
Hi Pippin,
I have uploaded your plugin but when i click chose image it doesn’t do anything.
Any advice?
Thanks,
Don
@Don – there’s a small bug that occurs occasionally causing this. I’ll try to submit a fix soon. In the mean time, you can just copy and paste an image url.

@Don and everyone else – I’ve just updated to v1.0.2. This should fix the problem that some of you had.
Hi pippin, your cool plugin works flawlessly here (despite some 1001 other flaws in wp to still be resolved).
Just a little suggestion: WP asked me to update your plugin today, but I couldn’t find any changelog. Could you please supply this for the next update? It makes me a lot more secure to know what changes (or should change) in an automatic update … thanks !
@Pascal – Yes, I’ll make sure to include a changelog next time.
I installed into WP 3.2.1 using the depository. When I activate the plugin and go to its settings, I cannot upload any images. The reason is strange: The upload box appears “off-screen”, to the left, such that I can see only the very right edge of it. I cannot scroll over to it — it’s probably being offset to a negative pixel location. Any thoughts?
@Bernard – I’ve seen that bug reported by one other user, though I’m not sure what’s causing it yet. Until I get it fixed, you can just copy and paste the image URL into the field next to the upload button.
When will the extended version of this plugin be available on code canyon? thanks!
@Foxtastic – Next week probably, it is almost done π Just in the testing phase.
Hey everyone, the Pro version of this plugin is now available: https://pippinsplugins.com/full-screen-background-images-plugin-pro/
Great plug-in. Exactly what I needed. Thanks!
@Bob – Excellent, glad you like it π I’d encourage you to check out the pro version as well if you’re interested in a lot more features.
broken in 3.2.1 – does not allow you to choose a background image. just sits there and never brings up the dialog to allow one to either select from media library or to upload from computer. Gotta find another source for something that works.
@Michael – this bug has been reported already and I’m working on fixing it. It only happens in rare cases so it is harder to track down.
@Michael – After some more testing I was able to replicate the issue and find a fix. Please download v1.0.3 (available from the WP plugin repository and here on this site).
When I try to install the full screen plug in version 1.0.3 I get the following error message (can you help with this?):
The uploaded file exceeds the upload_max_filesize directive in php.ini.
Internal Server Error
The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.
Please contact the server administrator, cgiadmin@yourhostingaccount.com and inform them of the time the error occurred, and anything you might have done that may have caused the error.
More information about this error may be available in the server error log.
Are you installing it with FTP or the built-in plugin installer? If you’re not trying it with FTP, then try that. It sounds like your server has a really low file size limit.
Installing in WP 2010 theme, I am able to access the plugin and set the image and save but it never shows on the live site as the background. Any idea?
By WP 2010, do you mean the default Twenty Ten theme?
Yes – I am running default 2010. I did delete the comments and footer sections however. I tried it in 2011 and it worked fine – until I deleted the footer and comments sections. I think that may be the issue.
The wp_footer() function, inside of footer.php is required. That should never be deleted from any theme.
I am installing through the built-in plugin installer. I will try through FTP later today and see if that works. Once I install thruogh FTP will I see it in the plug-ins screen and will I then just need to activate it or what should I expect once loaded through FTP?
Yep, you will see the plugin in the plugins menu. Make sure you unzip it first.
I was able to upload the full screen plug in version 1.0.3 by FTP but my question now is how to I unzip it?
You need to unzip it before you upload. Simply right click on the zip file, and choose the unarchive option. The label will differ, depending on whether you are on Windows, Mac, or Linux.
I followed your instructions to unzip full screen plug in version 1.0.3 first and then upload through FTP and it worked awesome! You are awesome! Thank you so much. I learn something new every day. Thank you!
Hi, I have a really weird situation. I have used this before and it has been perfect but on my new site I have a problem.
On searching for the plugin I installed 1.0 but it didn’t show in the plugin list. Thinking I had missed something I went back to the search and noticed that it was installed. But no show in the list.
So I installed 1.0.3 which installed but doesn’t take an image, the preview screen sits blank. So now I am lost, second version isn’t working, first version is installed but not showing, not even in my files as an installed plugin.
Obvious thing would be that V1 is messing with v1.03, but if this is the case how do I uninstall V1?
Many Thanks
Andy
Yeah something weird happened causing there to be two versions available in the repository.
Login to your FTP and delete the plugin completely, then try installing it again, and make sure it’s v1.0.3
I have uploaded this via FTP and did manual install and activated however when upload/URL or from media library it does nothing and just hangs.
A fix would be perfect before we try the pro version.
John
The admin page displays fine, but the image never uploads? What if you open the media library then copy the URL of the image you want, and the paste it into the image field? Does that work?
Yes Pippin I have tried every option to no avail.
This is exactly the same problem I’m having!
Does it hang when you first load the page or when you try to insert the image? Which version of the plugin are you using? For some reason that I have not figured out, two separate versions are available on the repository. Make sure you do not have v1.0. The latest is newer than that.
Yes it just hangs and I have the latest version
When does it hang, when you click Upload/Choose Image or Insert Into Post?
